John Jay

The New York lawyer and diplomat who wrote a handful of the Federalist Papers, then became the first Chief Justice of the United States. He shaped the foreign policy of the young nation and helped define, from the bench, what the new judicial power was for. The quietest of the three Federalist authors, and the one who first sat at the head of the Court the Constitution created.
