The lawyer who turned nonviolent resistance from a moral instinct into a political method capable of moving an empire. Hind Swaraj and his later writings set out satyagraha, the force of truth, as disciplined refusal rather than passive submission. He took the seed from Thoreau and grew it into a campaign that freed a subcontinent. King took it from him in turn. Few ideas have traveled so far and changed so much.
